I am the pastor of a San Francisco Bay Area church. Our ministry is a bit unique in that on our 14 acre campus, in addition to our church complex, we operate a Swim, Tennis and Fitness facility. Every week, because of our unique calling, some 5000 people come to us and call either the church or the community center their home. About 80% of those people are unchurched completely. For some time I had been praying for the right opportunity to bring Doug Pollock out to train our staff and the core of our church in Irresistable Evangelism. We hosted an all church retreat in May, and every attendee received Doug’s book with their pre-registration and was asked to read it before attending the retreat. We flew Doug out early to coach our staff in sharpening our evangelism value, strategy and scorecard. What took place our weekend together was nothing short of supernatural! Our people were not given a canned presentation, but proven tools, an eternal perspective, and relevant media saturated presentations (a key value for us here in Silicon Valley!) that both equipped and inspired. Our people wrestled, practiced, interacted, discussed, prayed, cried and laughed till our cups were full. At the end of the weekend, we were a force ready to bless, serve and engage our community with a strategy that I believe is germane and significant in bringing Jesus to people. My only regret is that I didn’t bring Doug out sooner! Our whole church has been catapulted to a whole new level, evangelistically speaking! If you have your Lead Pastor’s ear, please encourage him to consider bringing Doug in. The American church needs the Irresistible Evangelism experience.  Gary L. Gaddini, Lead Pastor, Peninsula Covenant Church, Redwood City, CA

Many evangelical Christians are competent in presenting the content of the gospel but not in connecting with people in a way that they want to live the gospel with us in community. Doug, I think your grasp of our current culture and where people are at spiritually is spot on. You understand the thinking of post modern people without using overused Christian language to describe it. Your non-confrontational approach is refreshing, informative, and challenging.  John M. Lamb, Regional Director Great Plains Region, Campus Crusade for Christ

“As I reflected on our recent workshop with Doug Pollock, I found myself wishing that I had heard it 20 years ago. There have been multiple occasions when my well-intentioned “evangelistic” style was too aggressive and eventually pushed somebody further from the cross rather than nearer to our Savior. Doug’s approach is authentic, fresh, and innovative, and filled with practical wisdom. Your church can’t afford to miss the conversation Doug’s visit will stir up.”   Tim Brock (Senior Pastor) White River Christian Church, Noblesville, IN

Preliminary Planning

Thank you for your interest in bringing “Irresistible Evangelism” into your sphere of ministry influence. “Irresistible Evangelism” is a wholistic approach to evangelism that strives to balance urgency with wisdom, boldness with compassion, harvesting with sowing, and proclamation with listening. It is culturally sensitive, biblically based, and principle-driven; hence it is relevant anywhere in the world and appeals to everyone in the body of Christ regardless of spiritual gifting or personality types. The practical hand’s on training that occurs in our workshop is designed to help believers gain a sense of competence and confidence which is sorely needed for transforming inwardly focused Christians into outwardly focused followers of Christ.

The cost of bringing “Irresistible Evangelism” to your people will be mission’s money well spent as I am committed to equipping your people for real ministry in the real worlds in which they live. After piloting these ideas in many different ministry settings, the following resources and ideas are being sent to help you maximize the impact that can occur when your people grasp the implications of “Irresistible Evangelism”. Because you understand your unique ministry context, I’m trusting that you will pick and choose the resources and ideas that best fit your situation. If you find that you need something else to get you where you want to go, don’t hesitate to let me know so that I can serve you accordingly.

Meet with your key leaders to discuss a specific plan of action of how to best build “Irresistible Evangelism” into the DNA of your ministry. If your leaders are not committed to it, it will probably not happen. Approach other key ministry leaders in your area to discuss an area wide strategy. In your meetings, use the following ideas as a starting point for your discussion and planning. I believe the Spirit will lead you into the best plan for your context. (Please make hard copies of the most pertinent info from my website to hand out to your leadership team. This will eliminate much of the miscommunication that can occur when trying to pull something like this off with an out of town speaker.)

Step 1: Introduce “Irresistible Evangelism”

I have found in most cases that busy people will not put one more thing into their schedules unless they are convinced that it will be time well spent. A workshop on evangelism is a big ask. I’ve found that if most of the following ideas are implemented, people will be much more inclined to make such a commitment.

1. Bring me in to speak one month in advance from the workshop date. My message will help to eliminate “evangiphobia” and build credibility and excitement for the workshop. Download the sermon outline and have it printed up to place in the bulletins the Sunday I preach: Irresistible Evangelism Sermon Outline

2. Encourage everyone to buy the book at my author’s reduced price ($13, call me and I will send you what you need) and read it ahead of time. This helps to create a buzz and primes the pump for a more stimulating workshop. You will also find articles that I wrote for “Outreach Magazine” and “Discipleship Journal” on my website. Handing these out to your people ahead of time will give them a taste of what I’ll be talking about. “Have You Wondered Into Anyone’s Heart Lately?” would be my preference.

3. Use the DVD clips (you can download Quicktime at Apple.com to play them), promo-flyer, pictures, press release / bulletin announcement, and quotes to promote the workshop.

4. Have everyone respond to the following two questions; What kinds of thoughts and feelings does the word evangelism stir up in you? If Doug could address one thing that would help you be more effective in sharing your faith, what would it be? Collect and synthesize the results, share them with your leaders, and send them to me one week before the workshop date.

Step 2: Following up “Irresistible Evangelism”

Have a follow-up meeting planned after the workshop (announce it the day of the workshop). Prepare people to discuss the big ideas that your people are taking away from the workshop and to share one action step they felt the Lord was leading them to take. After listening to your people, discuss with your leaders what organizational changes and steps need to be taken next to further deepen the impact of the workshop. Please make sure you scroll through the follow up ideas listed on the Practitioners page of my website. You will find the ideas listed there to be quite helpful and practical as you consider next steps. In most cases, I would be available to preach the next day if my workshop was on Saturday. This is another way to expose the folks who did not come on Saturday as well as build on the momentum for those who did. You can download my follow-up sermon called Jesus Glasses and have it printed up and placed in the bulletins: Jesus Glasses Follow up Sermon

Some Comments from Workshop Attendees (See Comments for More):

•It was great. It seemed to be a far more through the “eyes of Jesus” approach to evangelism than anything else I’ve encountered.

•There were a lot of “light bulb” moments- I’m so exited now about evangelizing! As before I was discouraged that it was a waste of time with methods I’d been told or had seen-the ‘turnoffs’ that were talked about exactly. This method of evangelism is the way to go. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

•The only way to Evangelize.

•A Thought provoking presentation-helpful, clear & so very possible for the ordinary person to put into effect.

•Superb! Wish the Whole church could hear it! Particularly helped by “wondering,” – the missing key for me. Thank you.

•The most insightful and talk on personal evangelism I have ever heard.

•I’m excited about being able to evangelize as a real person and not have to energize myself into being a super sales person. I’d never heard the emphasis on listening and wondering in evangelism. I think this will open new doors and conversations now.
